Edmundson was born in 1952 in New York City. He graduated from Columbia University and Yale University, where he studied English literature. After teaching at several universities, he joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1989. He is currently a professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Virginia.

Edmundson has written extensively about literature, culture, and education. His work has been praised by critics for its originality, its insights, and its passion. He has been awarded numerous prizes for his writing, including the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

In his work, Edmundson argues that the humanities are essential for a well-rounded education. He believes that the humanities help us to understand ourselves and our world better. They teach us about human nature, history, and culture. They also help us to develop our critical thinking skills and our ability to communicate effectively.

Edmundson is also a sharp critic of American culture. He argues that our culture is too focused on materialism and individualism. He believes that this has led to a decline in our sense of community and our ability to have meaningful conversations.

Edmundson's work is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the contemporary world. He is a brilliant critic who has a deep understanding of human nature and culture. His work is both challenging and rewarding, and it will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Here are some of Edmundson's most important books:

  • Literature Against the Grain (1993)
  • Teachers and Their Traditions (1995)
  • Why Read? (1997)
